About the Canon 1Dx and 1Dx Mk II
Canon 1Dx
Canon’s digital SLR model 1DX combined the best of the EOS 1D series into a single flagship design when it was launched in October 2011. Featuring an 18.1 megapixel full-frame Dual Digic 5+ CMOS sensor, the Canon 1DX offers professional surf and water photographers the ultimate in image quality, autofocus performance, and high speed continuous shooting to capture the action at its peak.
The Canon 1DX boasts an incredible ISO range of 100-51,200, giving action photographers the option to shoot in low light conditions that would otherwise be lost. This high-performance camera can shoot up to 14 frames per second (fps) in super high-speed mode, allowing professional photographers to capture the peak of the action. The updated 61-point high-density reticular autofocus system allows action photographers to track fast moving subjects via a range of autofocus modes. Those autofocus modes include: contrast detect, phase detect, multi-area, selective single-point, tracking, single, continuous, and face detection. This rugged camera built for working pros also features a reinforced shutter system which is rated for 400,000 photos and is weather / water sealed. The camera also shoots full 1080p HD video. Since the 1DX was replaced with the EOS-1DX Mark II, used and refurbished models of this camera can be found for $4,600 or less.
18.1 Megapixel CMOS Sensor
The Canon 1DX SLR camera features a recently developed 18.1-mp full frame CMOS feature designed to produce high resolution and immaculately detailed images with unparalleled clarity and speed. At a full 24 x 36mm, the sensor is capable of capturing 5184 x 3456 large images at individual pixels of 6.95 µm and has a much improved ratio of S/N, which results to much better images right from the start.
Having an innovative photodiode structure and a well-enhanced photoelectric conversion, the camera’s sensor sensitivity is fully enhanced by about 2 stops compared to the previous models. This means that it has the higher ISOs and has the least noise as compared to other EOS digital cameras. A 2-line 16 channel with simultaneous readout of signal means that a speed of up to 12 fps and even 14 fps are totally possible with this camera.
14-bit A/D Conversion
The Canon 1DX not only provides a 14-bit signal processing to achieve excellent image gradation. It also delivers a much higher standard and well expanded ISO, as well as a score of several new options to help enhance shooting in a fast changing and varied lighting conditions. Having a standard ISO range of 100-51200, the Canon 1DX is capable of shooting at an expanded sensitivities down to the ISO 50 and up to 102400. Beyond the obvious benefits of having a wide ISO range, the 1DX features automatic ISO settings, which you will find on its dedicated ISO menu. Maximum and minimum ISO settings can be possibly specified, including a user-designed range, as well as a full manual and automatic.
Dual DIGIC 5+ Image Processors
To achieve a whole new level of shooting performance, the 1DX makes use of the Dual DIGIC 5+ Image processors. This includes four of 4 channel A/D converter and front-end processing circuits, capable of delivering speeds as much as 12 fps for raw and jpeg and 14 fps for jpeg. Unlike its predecessor, the Dual DIGIC 5+ Image Processors provides about 17 times faster processing speed and comes with new algorithms that help to promote better noise reduction at higher ISO.
Aside from the conventional image processing functionalities of the Dual DIGIC 5+, it provides real time compensation for a Chromatic Aberration applicable in both motion and still images. By combining the power of these two processors, speed improvement will be highly noticeable from the moment you turn the camera on. The stunning image results are evident of these.
The Canon 1DX is the best choice of camera for professional photographers who are in the field of extreme sports and wedding events. The camera is incomparable in terms of precision, performance, ruggedness and speed. Responding well to user inputs, the new updated firmware version 2.0.3 has added enhancements to the camera, which results in a highly improved AF performance, with more control over customization and exposure. This helps users to have a great tool to use for what they do best – capturing images of golden opportunities.
Canon 1Dx Mk II
With the launch of the 1DX Mark II in early 2016, Canon updated its flagship DSLR as a formidable tool for professional photographers and videographers. It is the ideal partner of multi-media image-makers who are in need of shooting speed and other video capabilities.
Its signature features are its rugged processing capabilities and its capacity to deliver high-end multimedia output. Keeping pace with the move to high definition video, the 1DX Mark II is perfect for action or water shooters to create beautiful slow motion video.
CMOS Sensor + Dual DIGIC 6+ Image Processor
Canon has redeveloped its 1DX Mk II to feature a full-frame 20.2MP CMPS sensor. This works well with its Dual DIGIC 6+ Image Processor to deliver images that have notable qualities and accuracy. The upgraded version of the DIGIC 6 processor allows the camera system to capture stills and videos with optimal speed. Its continuous rates clock up at 16 fps when working in the live view mode.
With its viewfinder, users are able to shoot up to 14 fps, giving the camera the capacity to capture up to 170 raw files in just one burst. An unlimited number of frames can be captured when shooting in JPEG format. The sensors of the 1DX Mark II is the first to use the Dual Pixel CMOS AF which makes it the ideal machine for recording DCI 4K videos. High-quality frame grabs are also possible at 8 megapixels.
Other speed enhancements include the addition of a CFast 2.0 memory card slot. It allows sports photographers to achieve a maximum burst rate of 170 RAW photos shot continuously!
Autofocus
The camera has a 61-point High Density Reticular AF II system, which gives it fast tracking performance and accurate focusing. Part of its enhancement is its 41 cross-type points and highly improved center focusing sensitivity.
The new EOS Intelligent Tracking and Recognition autofocus enables easier tracking of fast-moving subjects for sports photographers – whether shooting still photos or video.
The AF and metering systems of the device are also bolstered by the use of a separate and dedicated DIGIC 6 processor. This makes recording a 4k video a breeze even at fast continuous speeds.
Canon also deployed the AI Servo AF III+ algorithm on the 1DX Mark II so it can intelligently acquire focus in Large Zone AF, single-point and other focusing modes.
